MORE than 500 workers at Dounreay nuclear power station are set to strike this week in a battle against pay cuts.
Workers at the site overwhelmingly backed strike action last month, rejecting Nuclear Restoration Services’ (NRS) offer of a 4.5 per cent pay uplift and £500 in cash.
Their union, Unite, argues that with no pay rise since April 2023 and inflation running at 11.4 per cent over that period, it amounts to a real-terms pay cut while the highest-paid director at NRS — a subsidiary of the UK government’s Nuclear Decommisssioning Authority — has seen their pay rocket from £331,000 to £651,000.
Ahead of the 24-hour strike tomorrow, Unite industrial officer Marc Jackson warned “a significant pay cut just isn’t going to be tolerated.”
He said: “NRS need to realise, if they don’t already, that we are heading for prolonged industrial action.
“Unite is actively looking at further days of action because NRS seem incapable of resolving this dispute through negotiation.
“The company should be under no illusions as to the determination of our members to get the pay rise they deserve.”
NRS was contacted for comment.
