Construction workers at Sellafield to strike
Sellafield Nuclear Plant in Seascale, Cumbria

CONSTRUCTION workers at the Sellafield nuclear site will strike from tomorrow in a dispute over pay.

Unite said 1,500 of its members, including electricians, joiners and welders, at the Cumbria site will walk out until October 13, having previously struck for four days in September.

The union said other nuclear projects pay premiums it wants Sellafield to match, and it warned of further industrial action if the dispute is not resolved.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Our members are highly skilled workers operating in an extremely challenging environment.

“That this is the most significant industrial action at Sellafield in recent history speaks volumes about the levels of feeling among the workforce.”

In addition, a continuous overtime ban will start on October 14.

Unite said it would welcome the involvement of the conciliation service Acas to try to reach an agreement.
