Colombian President Gustavo Petro addresses people at the International Workers' Day march in Bogota, Colombia, May 1, 2024

COLOMBIAN President Gustavo Petro announced on Wednesday that his government will break diplomatic relations with Israel, effective from Thursday over the Israeli assault on Palestinians in Gaza.

Announcing the break, Mr Petro described Israel’s siege of Gaza as “genocide.”

He previously suspended purchases of weapons from Israel and compared that country’s actions in Gaza to those of Nazi Germany.
