A CAMPAIGNER calling for the use of fossil fuels to be made history by 2030 has been arrested at Glasgow Airport.
Adrian Johnson, a former deputy headteacher from Perthshire, walked into the airport’s terminal building and stood for almost an hour holding an Oil Kills placard —an international network campaigning for a fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty — before being arrested by six police officers on Wednesday.
Mr Johnson said he took the “small, non-violent action in solidarity with the 21 UK political prisoners and all those taking part in the international uprising to Just Stop Oil by 2030.”
He said: “Our government is refusing to listen to the science while doing all it can to silence dissent.
“Criminalising, silencing and imprisoning peaceful campaigners is like hitting the snooze button on a fire alarm — it’s a really bad idea.
“When we are looking at outcomes as serious as billions of deaths and the collapse of human civilisation, and when the probability of that happening is not negligible, and is in fact growing at an increasing rate, you know it’s time to take action.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.10pm on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, we received a report of a protest at Glasgow Airport, Caledonia Way, Paisley.
“A 58-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection.
“A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
