Biden attempts to woo unions following debate blunder

UNITED STATES President Joe Biden attempted to woo the country’s biggest unions today as he faces pressure from his own party to abandon his re-election campaign.

The 81-year-old Democrat was set to meet with the executive council of US’s largest federation of trade unions, the AFL-CIO which represents 12.5 million union members.

It comes after Mr Biden’s weak debate performance against presidential candidate Donald Trump on June 27, which raised fears about his ability to compete in November’s election.

The AFL-CIO said that the president was booked to attend the meeting for over a year.

A White House official said that Mr Biden intends to thank the union leaders for their support and outline his plans for the future.

United Steelworkers International president David McCall said before today’s meeting that his union “proudly supports” Mr Biden, and his “record of delivering for working people stands for itself.”

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers president Kenneth Cooper said his union members “couldn’t ask for a stronger advocate.”

Other unions have been less supportive and Mr Trump has also made a play for union support, meeting with Teamsters Union officials in January.
