Aboriginal man with disabilities dies in police custody

AUSTRALIA’S Aboriginal community have been shaken by the second death of a Warlpiri man in police custody.

The family of Kumanjayi White are demanding CCTV footage and an independent investigation, a week after the 24-year-old died at a supermarket in Alice Springs.

“The young Warlpiri man is my grandson,” said community leader Ned Hargraves.

“We know that he was held down by two police officers until he lost consciousness and perished. But we are in the dark about what really happened.”

Mr Hargraves said that Mr White had disabilities and had been living in supported accommodation.

“He needed support, not to be criminalised,” he said.

Northern Territory Police said that it will investigate on behalf of the coroner.

Senator Lidia Thorpe, Amnesty International and community group Justice Not Jails have backed calls for an independent investigation.

Mr White's death comes six years after 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker was shot dead by Northern Territory officer Zachary Rolfe.

Both men were from Yuendumu, a remote community of 870 people.

“I am angry and frustrated that yet another one of our young men has lost his life at the hands of the police,” Mr Hargraves said.

“Has our community not gone through enough?”
