MODERN languages cuts at University of Aberdeen are “an act of sociocultural vandalism,” say trade unionists.
Plans to axe the courses have faced widespread criticism from students and the 17,000 people who signed a petition in opposition, to the consulates of France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
UCU members at the university, fighting for the 30 jobs at stake, announced plans to begin strike action on March 12.
But Aberdeen TUC has demanded a U-turn on the cuts in an open letter to the university.
It said: “This is but the latest proof of the catastrophic effects of a fundamentally broken funding model that treats universities like market enterprises rather than institutions providing a vital public service.
“But the response to these challenges cannot be to commit an act of sociocultural vandalism by reducing the provision of teaching and research.
“The choice is still yours: either become known for playing fast and loose with people’s futures and livelihoods and with the sociocultural fabric of an entire region, or become known for standing by your people and your principles in the face of adversity.”
The University of Aberdeen has been contacted for comment.
