LABOUR has repeated the “same mistakes” in its revised policy on tipping, the Unite union said on Monday, calling for the government to withdraw its “flawed” code of practice for further consultation.

The government has reneged on its promise to give workers full control on the allocation of tips by instead only requiring hospitality bosses to consult on how the monies would be allocated, the union said.

Unite says that this will disadvantage the lowest-paid workers — often on precarious contracts — and allow tips to be used to offset the underpayments of other workers such as kitchen staff.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Workers should have control over their own tips, pure and simple.

“The government messed this up the first time in their code of practice on tipping. The fact that they are now repeating the same mistakes in a revised version that was supposed to address workers concerns is genuinely concerning.”
