PROTESTERS squatting in a Pall Mall office vowed yesterday to keep on occupying central London buildings as they prepared for imminent eviction.
Members of the Autonomous Nation of Anarchist Libertarians and Squatter and Homeless Autonomy lost their battle for possession of the former Institute of Directors headquarters at a hearing on Monday.
But as they prepared to confront the bailiffs, occupiers told the Star that new venues were being considered for future occupations.
Student and housing activist Sylvia Mann said: “We are here to be a thorn in the side of this government.
“My things are packed — this just keeps happening. We’ll just move somewhere else.”
For Ms Mann squatting is a new thing — she was forced to take shelter after finding herself homeless late last year.
“I don’t know where I’d live otherwise,” she said as she refuted the Evening Standard’s claim that “posh” squatters were there out of fancy.
The occupation of residential properties was made a criminal offense in September 2012 as one of the coalition’s first flagship policies.
But campaigners have promised to up the ante after Tory MP Mike Weatherley launched his bid to apply the same rules to commerical properties.
Referring to courts’ new ability to have residential squatters arrested and jailed, Ms Mann was adamant: “We are going to have to start and get more militant with that.”
“Because they want to put commercial buildings (under the same law) as well and that’s a massive ‘fuck you’.”
For now the occupiers intend to stay at the renamed Institute of Dissidents until kicked out.
Eviction is expected to take place before noon today.
