MASSIVE budget cuts at Suffolk County Council will be a “disaster” resulting in hundreds of job losses and taking services “past breaking point,” Unison warned today.

The local authority is set to make £65 million of spending cuts, including £11m in staffing costs over the next year.

Unison branch secretary Neil Bland said: “It’s still too early to say exactly where the axe will fall, but cuts on this scale will mean hundreds of job losses.

“Even if the council manages to avoid or minimise compulsory redundancies, remaining staff will have unmanageable levels of extra work piled on them.

“Communities across Suffolk are sure to feel the hit.

“But cuts are inevitable unless Westminster stops starving local government of desperately needed funds.”

The council was approached for comment.

Deputy council leader Richard Rout, who is responsible for finances at the county, previously said: “Our proposed budget next year will be about £752m, of which £105m alone is down to these cost pressures from inflation and increased demand.”
