Sport in brief with Jamie J: January 14, 2024

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Stenhousemuir won 2-0 at Spartans to notch up a record-breaking 11th consecutive win and move 14 points clear in the Scottish League Two after second-placed Peterhead lost by the same score at Stranraer.

Bonnyrigg Rose drew 1-1 with Dumbarton, Russell McLean netted an injury time penalty on his return to Forfar as they came from behind to beat Elgin 2-1 and bottom club Clyde drew 1-1 at East Fife.

WOMEN’S RUGBY UNION: Reigning champions Gloucester-Hartpury were made to work hard for a 33-27 bonus point win at Ealing that preserved their unbeaten record and moved them up to second place in the Women’s Premiership.

League leaders Saracens also kept their 100 per cent record intact after seeing off Exeter 39-26. Loughborough edged out Harlequins 29-26 and Bristol romped to a 50-12 win at bottom club Leicester.

NETBALL: Uganda beat Wales 59-48 in Saturday’s deciding rubber at Cardiff’s House of Sport to seal a 2-1 series win.

The Welsh had cruised to a 57-45 win in the first match before suffering a heavy 64-40 defeat on Friday.

Uganda’s goal shooter Mary Cholhok was named as the player of the series. Uganda now move on to next weekend’s Nation’s Cup tournament against hosts England, New Zealand and world champions Australia.

MEN’S CRICKET: Pakistan’s poor run of results continued as they slumped to a 21-run defeat against New Zealand in Hamilton on Sunday morning.

Chasing the Kiwis’ 194-8 Fakhar Zaman thumped 50 from just 25 balls and Babar Azam hit a rapid 66 but Shaheen Afridi was the only other batsmen to make double figures as Adam Milne finished with 4-33. New Zealand lead the five-match series 2-0.
