Teachers back England curriculum review with focus on black perspectives

TEACHERS have called for a review of the curriculum in England, with a specific report on black perspectives.

National Education Union (NEU) delegates voted for the measure at its annual conference in Bournemouth today.

The motion called for the union’s executive to prioritise a campaign for a curriculum review similar to one carried out by the Welsh government, which looked at ethnic minority contributions.

They agreed that the curriculum is failing to reflect the diversity of pupils’ backgrounds, and backed the “holistic inclusion of black perspectives [...] not just some aspects of history.”

Union leaders will now lobby exam boards for an alternative assessment as well as the government to make it mandatory for all schools to use resources that “respect the holistic nature of black contribution to society.”

The NEU is to also fund research into education that “provides universal access” regarding all students’ diverse roots and values.
