SCOTLAND’S First Minister Humza Yousaf has vowed to co-operate with Rishi Sunak for a “UK-wide approach” to the Post Office Horizon scandal.
After more than two decades of campaigning for redress over injustices meted out through flawed Post Office computer systems, an ITV drama, Mr Bates vs the Post Office, sparked ministerial action to set aside any convictions. The mass acquittal is unprecedented in British legal history.
Scotland’s separate criminal justice system will require action in Holyrood to provide similar relief to 100 subpostmasters wrongly convicted of embezzlement there, however.
Mr Yousaf has now written to Mr Sunak offering his support to pass a similar act north of the border, saying: “I welcome this announcement.
“The Post Office Horizon scandal requires urgent action to ensure those affected by unjust convictions can finally receive justice.
“Scottish ministers are keen to work with the UK government to deal with the impact on subpostmasters convicted in Scotland, ensuring that a UK-wide approach is taken to exonerate those wrongfully convicted in Scottish courts.”
